Privacy Policy & Legal Compliance
This policy is written for users, auditors, and App Store reviewers who need a clear statement of how Kahu Ola handles safety data, device permissions, and public-source references.
Overview
Kahu Ola is designed around data minimization, readable public safety information, and limited data exposure. The service is intended to complement official alerts with a clearer civic-tech interface, not replace formal emergency communications.
Data We Collect
Kahu Ola is built to use the minimum information necessary for each feature. Depending on the workflow, the system may process:
- User-authorized approximate or precise location inputs needed for distance, shelter, or route calculations.
- Module interaction context such as requested views, selected safety tools, and user-triggered actions.
- Support inquiries voluntarily sent to [email protected].
On-Device/Edge Processing
Location-sensitive calculations are designed so they can run on the user's device or an equivalent edge path whenever the platform supports that model. This includes workflows related to wildfire proximity, shelter discovery, evacuation logic, and other distance-based safety checks.
Kahu Ola does not require continuous background storage of raw precise location on centralized servers in order to provide its core safety functions.
Sharing
Kahu Ola does not sell user data and does not share personal information for advertising or behavioral profiling. Information may be disclosed only when required to operate the service, comply with law, or protect user and public safety.
Retention
Kahu Ola aims to retain the least data necessary for operational continuity. Where location-sensitive calculations occur for immediate safety purposes, retention is limited by design and is not intended to create a persistent historical log of raw precise location by default.
Security
Reasonable administrative, technical, and operational safeguards are used to reduce unnecessary exposure of data and maintain service integrity. No system can be guaranteed to be perfectly secure, so users should also follow official emergency instructions and normal device security practices.
Children
Kahu Ola is not intended to knowingly collect personal information from children without appropriate authorization. If you believe a child has provided information improperly, contact [email protected] for review.
International
Kahu Ola is a civic-tech project focused on Maui County. If the service is accessed from outside the United States, users understand that information may be processed in the jurisdictions where the service is hosted or accessed, subject to applicable law.
Contact
Privacy questions, legal inquiries, and compliance requests may be sent to [email protected].
Non-Affiliation
Kahu Ola is an independent civic technology initiative. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or officially connected to NASA, NOAA, USGS, FEMA, EPA, or any U.S. government agency. All referenced data is sourced through publicly available Open Data APIs.
